The retina is the neuro-sensory part of the eye. Light energy (photons) are converted to chemical energy which is converted to electrical energy. This electrical energy courses through the brain terminating at the occipital cortex. Eye diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration and systemic diseases like diabetes, MS, hypertension, HIV, lupus, and TB can cause damage to the delicate retinal structures leading to vision loss.
